Up The Chute You Go!

Mutterings And Murmurs . Social Studies

Anyone who has ever experienced the smells and sounds of a mid 60’s livestock and meat processing plant should try to re-experience the experience while reading this. Think about how freaked your mother got when the wind changed direction after she had just hung out the laundry to dry.

These days, and for as long as meat is a thing, and before the advent of insect meat, music soothes the condemned beast and makes for better tasting meat during and after processing. This only applies to humane meat processing plants that cater to elite and wealthy carnivores. The great unwashed meat eaters could care less what type of music the beast hears before slaughter. Perhaps Norwegian Satanic Screamo Death Metal would serve better. A fearful beast makes for a less tasty product but meat is meat. The chemicals of fear can taint the meat but that is what barbecue sauce is for. A fearful beast will evacuate it’s bowels and bladder while being loaded onto livestock carriers, during transport, and while being unloaded and forced through corrals and up a chute. At the end of the chute, a pneumatic bolt will strike them in the forehead where hooks will grapple them and hoist them into the inner works of the processing plant. The workers hope that the beasts have voided their waste systems before entering the plant proper. You get the idea.

Try to transfer the meat processing plant scenario to that line-up so many stand in to get into a restaurant or an outdoor sporting event in British Columbia. Muzzled, two legged sheep or cattle are being funneled in lines or corrals, separated to a safe distance, marked by circles on the ground, waiting to eagerly present their special privilege pass which shows that they are docile beasts willing to comply with anything if it means they can participate in not normal behavior and new, segregationist social norms. They look around to the other beast as if to say, “See? I have virtue!” These beasts have been made dumb and have been given a superiority complex which makes being dumb less painful. They present their pass with self righteous pride. They are being double plus good in looking out for their fellow beasts, not sensing any danger. These beasts are willing to be enslaved and sent up the chute to whatever end may await. Those that refuse to or cannot comply are exhibiting double plus un-good behavior. They are unclean. They must be segregated from the herd and processed differently.
