These Are Future Ruins
Mutterings And Murmurs . Social StudiesIf any band of bloody genius musicians could ever rise again from a powerful but much overlooked and under listened history to produce the songs of a failing generation in existential times, Swervedriver could. They pondered younger, carefree days and faced dystopia through the nineties and continue now into the modern, existential present with sustained momentum. They took ‘Shoegaze’ to a level that very quickly propelled them out of the genre. They were just good and solid and melodic and never failed to inspire or make people, me being people, to drive fast or write more or think too much more or bob the head and sing while driving.
FUTURE RUINS
We are ruled by fools
These are future ruins
Rocket fuel
Force-fed rules
If I could only get my head around it
And if you could just place your legs around me
Relics fleeced
You fucked up the peace
Furies rise
A filthy prize
If I could only squeeze my hands around them
And if you could just hold them down
Surround them
Astound them
Flip the news
Reject the blues
Forever raze this filthy phase
If I could only set my sights upon you
And if you dispose your arms around me
Surround me
We are ruled by fools
These are future ruins
That the king is insane
Is now old news
Swervedriver are an English alternative rock band formed in Oxford in 1989 around core members Adam Franklin and Jimmy Hartridge. Between 1989 and 1998, the band released four studio albums and numerous EPs and singles despite a considerable flux of members, managers, and record labels. By 1993 the band’s lineup had settled with Franklin on vocals/guitar, Hartridge on guitar, Jez Hindmarsh on drums, and Steve George on bass. They had emerged with a heavier rock sound than their shoegaze contemporaries, and over the next five years it evolved to include elements of psychedelia, classic pop, and indie rock.
Record label issues and waning interest within the group led to their split at the end of 1998. A decade later, Swervedriver reunited and toured periodically over the next five years, releasing their first new material in fifteen years with the 2013 single “Deep Wound”. They have since released two full-length albums, ‘I WASN’T BORN TO LOSE YOU’ -2015 and ‘FUTURE RUINS’ -2019.
More please.
The Lonely Crowd Fades In The Air
[Chorus]
The lonely crowd fades in the air
The lonely crowd fades in the air
[Verse 1]
And so we’ve stumbled into the end of days
Where the future comes home to cry
So choose your colours wisely because things ain’t the same as in days gone by
[Chorus]
The lonely crowd fades in the air
The lonely crowd fades in the air
[Verse 2]
And in space no one can hear you cry
You’ll have to send me links to your dreams
And choose your weapons wisely
Because we’re gonna tear your holy wars down
[Chorus]
The lonely crowd fades in the air
The lonely crowd fades in the air
The lonely crowd
The lonely crowd
[Verse 3]
And so we’ve stumbled into the end of days
Where the future comes home to cry
So choose your colors wisely because things ain’t the same as in days gone by
[Chorus]
The lonely crowd fades in the air
The lonely crowd fades in the air
The lonely crowd fades in the air
Think of your last concert, the last one you get to see, hear, feel, and experience. Hopefully the band is someone you really wanted to see before you and everybody else present dies. Look around. Look at the faces, animated and sweaty. Joy, pain, and sorrow. Humanity is being moved. Humanity sways and pushes. Touches. You are moving with them…being touched by them. The band, their sound is moving you. Whatever happens after the show, you will at least have had this.
Bliss.
