On November 9-10, 1938, Nazi leaders unleashed a series of pogroms against the Jewish population in Germany and incorporated territories. The pretext for the pogroms was the shooting in Paris on Nov. 7 of the German diplomat Ernst von Rath by a Polish-Jewish student named Herschel Grynszpan. This event came to be called ‘Kristal Nacht’ ( The Night of Broken Glass because of the shattered glass that littered the streets after the vandalism and destruction of Jewish-owned businesses, schools, synagogues (267) , and homes. German authorities looked on without intervening. Over 7,000 Jewish businesses were damaged or destroyed. 30 thousand Jewish men were arrested and beaten or killed. Estimates of fatalities caused by the attacks have varied. Early reports estimated that 91 Jews had been murdered. German scholarly sources put the figure much higher. When deaths of post arrest maltreatment and subsequent suicides are included the death toll reaches into the hundreds. This precipitated the deaths of millions.
