Pyramid Schemes – Is This What They Mean?

You may be familiar with Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs. I learned about it in a Marketing Management course way back in the 80’s. Prior to that, my need for these were not being met. I had problems.

Maslow’s Hierarchy Of Needs is a motivational theory in psychology proposed by Abraham Maslow in his 1943 paper “A Theory of Human Motivation”.  It organizes human needs into a five-tier model, often depicted as a pyramid, where lower-level needs must be satisfied before higher-level needs become motivators. 

These needs are :

• Physiological Needs: Basic survival requirements such as food, water, air, sleep, and shelter. 
• Safety Needs: Security and stability, including personal safety, financial security, health, and protection from harm. 
• Love and Belongingness: Emotional connections through friendships, family, intimacy, and being part of a community. 
• Esteem Needs: Internal self-respect and external recognition, including status, achievement, and appreciation. 
• Self-Actualization: The realization of personal potential, creativity, and meaningful self-fulfillment. 

Maslow later proposed additional levels, including cognitive needs, aesthetic needs, and self-transcendence, though the original five-tier model remains the most widely recognized.  While the hierarchy suggests a progression from basic to complex needs, modern interpretations acknowledge that needs can be pursued simultaneously and vary across cultures and individuals. The theory is influential in psychology, education, management, and healthcare, though it has faced criticism for its lack of empirical support and cultural bias.

What a world we could have and leave for future generations if all of these needs could be met and shared for all good people. Heck, if they were all met, we may not have any bad people.
