Subject: Our Public Health
Dear Premier Smith and Health Minister Adriana LaGrange,
If any government is truly concerned over the dental health of citizens, it could target those most ‘vulnerable’ with access to affordable and effective dental hygiene, nutrition and products rather than medicate an entire population through the public water supply. If any municipality wants to medically intervene on public health and safety or express concern with the public health, it could alternatively offer fluoride supplements to the public that wants it, or in Airdrie’s case, because we draw from Calgary’s water supply, would have to offer water filtration to citizens that object to involuntary state medical and pharmaceutical intervention. Access to clean, safe, uncontaminated drinking water is a fundamental right that citizens are required to pay for. Introducing repurposed industrial waste and known neurotoxins, at any concentration, should be universally held as a bad idea. A simple reading of the warnings on fluoridated toothpastes, especially the ones marketed to appeal to children, should at the very least warrant serious investigation.
Forced or involuntary medical and pharmaceutical interventions supported by unreliable public institutions on a population have already been tried with disastrous results. There should be more vigorous, unbiased debate on whether or not, or to what extent, the state should intervene in matters of public health.
The National Citizens’ Inquiry is the most important, historical event and document in Canadian history. Public health care programs and institutions in Canada have proven unreliable if not malfeasant. The City of Airdrie’s ‘Healthier Together’ program, especially with institutions such as Alberta Health Services or Health Canada should be cautiously and transparently examined. To ignore the actual science and study of the actual and potential harms of mass pharmaceutical intervention renders the fluoride issue to a political ‘hot button’ platform rather than a measured concern for public health. For the City of Airdrie to not have a position on fluoridation, as has been publicly stated, is irresponsible. To ignore the fact that only five percent of the world fluoridates their water supply and not fully investigate the reasons why would amount to malfeasance. Perhaps the lack of recent statistical and geographical data into the use of fluoride should warrant further investigation. Perhaps we have collectively experienced enough medical malfeasance to last our lifetimes. Perhaps we can be the exception, if only for our future generations.
Sincerely, With Others,
Al Neitsch
