The Well Known Mysterious Stranger
Mutterings And Murmurs . Social StudiesSamuel Clemens was a great man and humanist. His work remains for generations to discover and enjoy but his books are harder to find in libraries and have in many cases been deemed irrelevant, inconvenient or harmful to the weak minded. They have been figuratively burned. Their library space has been replaced by feminine hygiene product dispensers in men’s washrooms and story times for kids told by mentally ill men needing to be predatory caricatures of women. These are, after all, modern times following or reviving the times of Sodom and Gemorrah or the Cultural Revolution, when the evil, the wicked and the gullible claim righteousness while committing the worst kind of immorality and cruelty on their fellow human beings. Malignant narcissism and degeneracy is roundly celebrated by the few. They clap and swoon in parliament and council chambers. Children are still being sacrificed. Witches are still being burned. The dunking stool has gone digital. Gaza burns. Footage of Beslan, Rotheringham and The Bataclan are played in heavy rotation. Dresden still burns. The Rhine Meadows still bloom.
‘The Mysterious Stranger’ is a posthumous, unfinished novella, written between 1897 and 1908. It is set in 1590 Austria and tells a story of a boy who encounters an angel called Satan, who reveals to him the true nature of human existence. By the end of the story, Satan tells the youth, “There is no God, no universe, no human race…no heaven or hell. It is all a dream – a grotesque and foolish dream. Nothing exists but you.”
This work is a great departure from the light hearted and humorous writing that made Twain a much loved American writer. It is a nihilistic and world weary depiction of man’s inhumanity to man and the corruptible, self centered nature of humans subjected to mass formation psychosis and social engineering.
From ‘the Mysterious Stranger’ –
“Oh it’s true. I know your race. It is made up of sheep. It is governed by minorities, seldom or never by majorities. It suppresses its feelings and its beliefs and follows the handful that makes the most noise. Sometimes the noisy handful is right, sometimes wrong; but no matter, the crowd follows it. The vast majority of the race, whether savage or civilized, are secretly kindhearted and shrink from inflicting pain, but in the presence of the aggressive and pitiless minority they don’t dare to assert themselves. Think of it! One kindhearted creature spies on another, and sees to it that he loyally helps in iniquities which revolt both of them. Speaking as an expert, I know the ninety-nine out of a hundred of your race were strongly against the killing of witches when that foolishness was first agitated by a handful of pious lunatics in the long ago. And I know that even today, after ages of transmitted prujudice and silly teaching, only one person in twenty puts any real heart into the harrying of a witch. And yet apparently everybody hates witches and wants them killed. Some day a handful will rise up on the other side and make the most noise – perhaps even a single daring man with a big voice and a determined front will do it – and in a week all the sheep will wheel and follow him, and witch-hunting will come to a sudden end. “
“Monarchies, aristocracies, and religions are all based upon that large defect in your race – the individual’s distrust of his neighbor, and his desire, for safety’s or comfort’s sake, to stand well in his neighbor’s eye. These institutions will always remain and always flourish, and always oppress you, affront you, and degrade you, cause you will always be and remain slaves of minorities. There was never a country where the majority of the people were in their secret hearts loyal to any of these institutions.”
I did not like to hear our race called sheep and I said I did not think they were.
“Still, it is true, lamb,” said Satan. “Look at you in war – what mutton you are, and how ridiculous!”
“In war? How?”
“There has never been a just one, never an honorable one – on the part of the instigator of the war. I can see a million years ahead and this rule will never change in so many as half a dozen instances. The loud little handful – as usual – will shout for the war. The pulpit will – warily and cautiously – object – at first; the great, big, dull bulk of the nation will rub its sleepy eyes and try to make out why there should be a war and will say, earnestly and indignantly, “It is unjust and dishonorable and there is no necessity for it.” Then the handful will shout louder. A few fair men on the other side will argue and reason against the war with speech and pen, and at first will have a hearing and be applauded, but it will not last long; those others will outshout them, and presently the anti-war audiences will thin out and lose popularity. Before long you will see this curious thing: the speakers stoned from the platform, and free speech strangled by hordes of furious men who in their secret hearts are still at one with those stoned speakers – as earlier – but do not dare to say so. And now the whole nation – pulpit and all – will take up the war cry and shout itself hoarse, and mob any honest man who ventures to open his mouth, and presently such mouths will cease to open. Next the statesmen will invent cheap lies, putting the blame upon the nation that is attacked, and every man will be glad of those conscience-soothing falsities and will diligently study them, and refuse to examine any refutations of them, and thus he will by and by convince himself that the war is just and will thank God for the better sleep he enjoys after this process of grotesque sel-deception.”
This work is so easily adapted to what is happening in these ‘modern’, ‘progressive’ times of a Globalist Cultural Marxist Death Cult agenda. In spite of the bleating, hand wringing assertions of the ‘ruling’ few who claim the protection of Democracy, freedom and human rights for all, the slaughter of endless wars and genocide and totalitarian suppression of reason and truth continues. The tribalism and battle between good and evil and darkness and light grinds on. The screeching mobs take to the streets and occupy. Whether you believe in Satan or not, any reasonable person, those few, can see the evil that has taken hold of the few over the many as it happens, over and over again. Surely humanity needs a RESET. Just not ‘that’ one…’this’ one. Wake up from your dreams and nightmares and distractions.
Reject evil.
Find God if you can.
A Dream Within a Dream
Take this kiss upon the brow!
And, in parting from you now,
Thus much let me avow —
You are not wrong, who deem
That my days have been a dream;
Yet if hope has flown away
In a night, or in a day,
In a vision, or in none,
Is it therefore the less gone?
All that we see or seem
Is but a dream within a dream.
I stand amid the roar
Of a surf-tormented shore,
And I hold within my hand
Grains of the golden sand —
How few! yet how they creep
Through my fingers to the deep,
While I weep — while I weep!
O God! Can I not grasp
Them with a tighter clasp?
O God! can I not save
One from the pitiless wave?
Is all that we see or seem
But a dream within a dream?
