Obvious Variations On A Theme – Wake Up!

Mutterings And Murmurs . Social Studies

If you don’t stand for something, you’ll fall for anything.

If you don’t live for something, you’ll die for nothing.

If you don’t die for something, you will have died for nothing.

…or you will just die

Nothing is nothing.

Wake up! It’s not time to die yet!

“Nothing from nothing is nothing.” – Billy Preston

“I do not fear death. I had been dead for billions and billions of years before I was born, and had not suffered the slightest inconvenience from it.” – Mark Twain

“Death is nothing to us, since when we are, death has not come, and when death has come, we are not.” – Epicurus

“Since change is constant, you wonder if people crave death because it’s the only way they can get anything really finished. ” -Chuck Palahniuk

“Live a good life. If there are gods and they are just, then they will not care how devout you have been, but will welcome you based on the virtues you have lived by. If there are gods, but unjust, then you should not want to worship them. If there are no gods, then you will be gone, but will have lived a noble life that will live on in the memories of your loved ones.” – Marcus Aurelius

“There will be no Ben Affleck movies in the afterlife.” – Anonymous.

“Should I stay or should I go?” – The Clash

The deathbed conversion has also been a target of humor. Voltaire, on his own deathbed, was asked by a priest to renounce Satan and turn to God, he is alleged to have replied, “Now is no time to be making new enemies”. However, his last words are said to have been, “For God’s sake, let me die in peace.”

“I believe that when I die I shall rot, and nothing of my ego will survive. I am not young and I love life. But I should scorn to shiver with terror at the thought of annihilation. Happiness is nonetheless true happiness because it must come to an end, nor do thought and love lose their value because they are not everlasting. Many a man has borne himself proudly on the scaffold; surely the same pride should teach us to think truly about man’s place in the world. Even if the open windows of science at first make us shiver after the cozy indoor warmth of traditional humanizing myths, in the end the fresh air brings vigour, and the great spaces have a splendor of their own.” – Bertrand Russell
