ISOLATION – JOY DIVISION
Social Studies . Songs For The ApocalypseIn fear every day, every evening,
He calls her aloud from above,
Carefully watched for a reason,
Painstaking devotion and love,
Surrendered to self preservation,
From others who care for themselves.
A blindness that touches perfection,
But hurts just like anything else.
Isolation, isolation, isolation.
Mother I tried please believe me,
I’m doing the best that I can.
I’m ashamed of the things I’ve been put through,
I’m ashamed of the person I am.
Isolation, isolation, isolation.
But if you could just see the beauty,
These things I could never describe,
These pleasures a wayward distraction,
This is my one lucky prize.
Isolation, isolation, isolation…
‘Isolation’ was probably the most prophetic song written and released by Joy division. It hinted at the state of Ian Curtis’ mind for much of his short life. There is irony in his words that describe isolation as both torture and pleasure. There is pain in both shyness, separation and segregation whether self imposed or not.
There is a certain peace or pleasure that comes with isolation. Acceptance is the ‘wonderful prize’. Making peace with one’s perceived failings before one’s ultimate fate could very well be a personal ‘Rapture’. It’s the giving in or the giving up that brings exquisite relief, like the last hit of a safe supply drug or giving in to politically coerced experimental, fatal poison.
Eventually, the desperately lonely or people living in constant fear will give in to segregation, separation, oppression and death.
Isolation, Isolation, Isolation.
Perhaps not all of us.
Best not all of us.
Hope not all of us.
New Order was formed after Joy Division ended, after Ian Curtis killed himself.
They were good too!
